ABSTRACT
This research aimed to demonstrate the role of smell in operational safety, enabling a greater understanding of the consequences of anosmia, loss of smell, in the performance of aircrew. The review of incident and accident investigation reports in events involving odors, smoke and fire showed that the first source of identification of these threats usually occurs through the perception of atypical odors that can evolve into cases of smoke and fire or result in the presence of contaminants dispersed in cabin air. In any of the cases, the identification of the danger is essential for the correct analysis and quick decision-making by the crew, since in fire events, the delay in identifying the threat and deciding to land can result in the complete loss of control of the aircraft. The main causes of past events of air contamination, smoke and fire on board of aircraft are still present in recent events. However, in addition to these, the presence of portable personal electronic devices poses an additional hazard with an increasing number of events each year. Faced with the continuity of events, it is evident that the loss of smell, temporarily or permanently, results in the loss of the ability to identify and manage threats that are continually present in flights of any nature. As a result, it is highly recommended that crew members carry out their activities only with the fullness of their senses, including smell.
