ABSTRACT

Brazilian Air Force (FAB) rotary-wing pilots are recurrently exposed to whole-body vibration produced by the rotors, to a static and slightly rotated seated posture and to the limited ergonomics of the cockpit, conditions that favour muscle fatigue and the onset of musculoskeletal injuries capable of impairing operational performance and flight safety. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries among FAB helicopter pilots and to discuss the ergonomic, vibration and overload factors associated with them. It is a subset of an observational, quantitative and descriptive epidemiological survey, conducted through the Referred Morbidity Survey (IMR) adapted for pilots and applied online via Google Forms. Data from the 137 responding rotary-wing pilots were analysed (91.33% of the 150 pilots in the specialty, distributed across six aviation groups). Among them, 78 pilots (56.93%) reported an injury at some point in their career and 27 injuries were attributed to flight activity. The most affected anatomical region was the spine (70.4%) and the most prevalent type of injury was low back pain (44.4%), followed by disc herniation (22.2%); no cervical pain was reported (0.0%). The highest concentration of injuries occurred among pilots with more than 1,200 flight hours, and 40.7% of the injured continued flying in pain (symptomatic), without being grounded. It is concluded that spinal overload, associated with vibration and static posture, is the main risk factor in this category, and ergonomic interventions and specific physical training are recommended as preventive measures.
